Marjana Deržaj
Singer, radio and television personality, song festival winner, poet, a Slovene legend. Marjana Deržaj was a Slovene pop music singer who was born (and also died 69 years later) in Ljubljana. As a child, Marjana sang in Carmen at the Opera House in Ljubljana as a member of the choir. She went on to sing in different clubs in Ljubljana as a young adult and later she appeared many times on television and radio stations. In addition, Marjana was a frequent guest and the winner in different festivals of Slovene popular music. She was even once a member of the country music group Dobri Znanci . In 1964, Marjana won a festival with "Poletna Noč" (Summer Night). "Plez Oblakov" (Cloud’s Dance) was her next song to win (two years later), and nine years after that in 1975, Marjana received another award for the song "Mi Smo Taki" (Such We Are) performed as a duet with singer Bracom Korenom. In the 16 years that she competed in selections for Eurovision Song Award, she was never able to represent Slovenia at the Eurovision festival although she always placed among the finalists. Marjana recorded 312 songs, among them "Poletna Noč' which she sang for the first time in 1957 on Ljubljana’s Radio station. It is the most widely known song and one of the best Slovene around, which has been proven by its international commercial success.
