(25 Jan 1980) Alicia Keys is an "American [born in NYC to an Italian mother and a Jamaican father] R&B and soul singer, songwriter, pianist, record producer, actress, philanthropist, and author who has sold over twenty-seven million records worldwide and has won numerous awards, including nine Grammy Awards, eleven Billboard Music Awards, and three American Music Awards."1 Alicia Keys exhibited musical talents at a relatively early age; she started playing the piano at age 7, graduated as valedictorian from the esteemed School of Arts in NYC and attended Columbia Univ. for a time before pursuing her professional music career. Her first song released which has been said to blend diverse sounds such as R&B, hip-hop, classical, and jazz sold more than 50,000 copies on the first day (a jaw-dropping 235,000 copies in the first week) and went multi-platinum. A subsequent album "The Diary of Alicia Keys" won her a Grammy Award. And her most recent album "As I Am" (which includes contributions from Linda Perry and John Mayer and others) surpassed her personal record by earning over 742,000 sales in the first week.
